Old Internet Days

Posted by Josh-B - August 30th, 2007

I like to look at some of the old articles of Newgrounds' history sometimes. I hear of old issues of Tom's "questionable material" on the site. Lawyers of big companies could easily find stuff on the net that they thought should be removed. Parents worried more over these violent games that were popping up on the internet, and thought they should be removed as well. In 1999, most people could easily find and pick on this questionable material.

Fast forward 8 years,

Now, much bigger sites like Youtube, Myspace, ect. have started popping up. Much bigger issues for people on the internet, like stalkers, have emerged for people to focus on. Nowadays, most of the material on Newgrounds would probably be deemed questionable, back in the late nineties. But with these bigger issues out there, many people don't focus on petty things like violent games and (most of the time)copyright infringements.

I'm not saying we should focus on these issues more, I just thought it was kinda interesting.

I agree, although it's also because at this point, they realize they can't really prevent small stuff like this from happening, the stuff is just going to surface up some other way, and it is not hard. But you are right, they do have bigger problems to deal with so why bother.

Yah. I see what you're saying. I've been frequenting Newgrounds since 2000, thought only with any serious look at what it is over the last 5 or so years. And it's true that Newgrounds used to be a traget by industry, and parents, and people who don't really understand much of anythiing about what entertainment is.

Then things changed, and being questionable only matter if the people who saw it weren't questionable, and Newgrounds users got more questionable so it no longer mattered. Soon people had new things to complain about.

But my thoughts are that most of the new things arn't really much bigger than what happened before, because in another 8 years, new problems will be the focus, blocking out these ones. It's a cycle of, "let's let society know this is bad" and then "well now this is bad, guys."

Alot of these concepts are just what people have decided to say, they're the same as what we do on Newgrounds, just from different standpoints, maybe. It's all about what we think things are, not what they actually are. It has been, and looks like it always will be.

Those are my thoughts anyway.

A MOOSE BIT MY SISTER ONCE.
REALLY! SHE WAS CARVING HER INITIALS INTO THE SIDE OF IT WHEN...

LULZ

fuck you

Why thank you.

Now that's interesting, I found really stupid to worry about violent games.. but that is another rant.

I'm not worrying about anything. I'm just observing.
